Smáralind places great emphasis on sustainability in its operations and services. The shopping center is environmentally certified and meets strict requirements for environmental responsibility. We have implemented diverse solutions that support a greener future and make it easier for both visitors and tenants to choose an eco-friendly lifestyle.
BREEAM In-Use Certification
In 2019, Smáralind became the first building in Iceland to receive the BREEAM In-Use environmental certification. This certification supports sustainability and social responsibility in operations, while helping companies find ways to increase the value of their activities, reduce operation costs, and lower their carbon footprint. Recertification is required every three years and serves as third-party confirmation that the highest standards and requirements are being met in property management.
Charging Stations and Sustainable Transport
We have installed 35 parking spaces with electric vehicle charging stations and 152 bicycle parking spaces with good facilities, including a repair area for bikes. In this way, we encourage visitors and employees to use environmentally friendly means of transport.
Smart Waste and Recycling
At Smáralind, we have introduces Smart Waste, where waste is sorted and the quantities recorded for each tenant. This solution simplifies waste handling, increases efficiency, and improves access to recycling. Since implementing Smart Waste, the proportion of recycled waste has increased, and operations have become both more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
Green Leases
A Green Lease is a major step toward increased sustainability in the management of each rental space. With these agreements, tenants commit to working systematically on information sharing, goal setting, and performance in environmental matters. The number of Green Leases is growing rapidly, and it is encouraging to see the interest of tenants in making their operations more sustainable.
Energy Efficiency and Technical Solutions
At Smáralind, we emphasize energy-efficient solutions, monitoring, and energy tracking. Among other measures, cooling systems have been replaced and the building's lighting is now almost entirely LED, which significantly reduces the energy consumption of the property.
